Job Openings: There were 4.69 million job openings on the last business day of May, down from 4.94 million in April, but up 21% from 3.89 million in May 2013. Hires: There were 5.33 million hires in May, up from 5.25 million the prior month and up 3.9% from May 2013. Separations: Total turnover was 3.2% the same as in April but up from 3.1% a year ago. Within separations, the quits rate, 1.9%, was up from 1.8% in April and 1.6% May 2013. Layoffs and discharges ran 1.1% down from 1.2% and 1.2% a year ago. This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the non-farm sector by industry and by four geographic regions.
