• U.S. Job Openings, Hires, Turnover, Quits — December 2015


The number of job openings increased to 5.6 million on the last business day of December. Hires and separations were little changed at 5.4 million and 5.1 million, respectively.

Within separations, the quits rate was 2.1 percent, and the layoffs and discharges rate was 1.1 percent.

This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the nonfarm sector by industry and by four geographic regions.

• U.S. Job Openings, Hires, Turnover, Quits — November 2015


• There were 4.972 million job openings [all data NSA] on the last business day of November, up 11.7% from the same month a year ago; the job openings rate was 3.3%.

• Hires were 4.817 million, up 3.0% from the same month in 2014; the hires rate was 3.3%.

• Total separations were 4.281 million up 5.5% in the last 12 months. This yielded a “turnover” rate of 3.0% for the month…an annual equivalent of 36.0%.

• Within total separations, the 2.352 million quits [up 7.1%] yielded a quit rate of 1.6% percent and 1.612 million layoffs and discharges [up 7.1%] yielded a rate of 1.1%.

• There were 5.604 million job openings [all data NSA] on the last business day of June, up 9.9% from the same month a year ago; the job openings rate was 3.8%.

• Hires were 5.438 million, up 0.5% from the same month in 2014; the hires rate was 3.8%.

• Total separations were 5.008 million down 0.6% in the last 12 months. This yielded a “turnover” rate of 3.5% for the month…an annual equivalent of 42.0%.

• Within total separations, the 2.873 million quits [up 2.0%] yielded a quit rate of 2.0% percent and 1.757 million layoffs and discharges [down 4.8%] yielded a rate of 1.2%.

• U.S. Job Openings & Labor Turnover — September 2015

The number of job openings was little changed at 5.5 million on the last business day of September. Hires and separations were little changed at 5.0 million and 4.8 million, respectively.

Within separations, the quits rate was 1.9 percent for the sixth consecutive month, and the layoffs and discharges rate remained unchanged at 1.2 percent.

This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the nonfarm sector by industry and by four geographic regions.

The number of hires and separations was little changed at 5.1 million and 4.8 million, respectively.

Within separations, the quits rate was 1.9 percent for the fifth month in a row, and the layoffs and discharges rate was unchanged at 1.2 percent.

• Within total separations, the 3.085 million quits [up 5.8%] yielded a quit rate of 2.2% percent and 1.544 million layoffs and discharges [down 11.2%] yielded a rate of 1.1%.

Hires were 5.597 million in May, up 3% from May 2014; the hires rate was 3.9%.

Total separations were 4.689 million up 3% in the last 12 months. This yielded a “turnover” rate of 3.3% for the month…an annual equivalent of 39.6%.

Within total separations, the 2.748 million quits [up 7%] yielded a quit rate of 1.9% percent and 1.554 million layoffs and discharges [down 1.8%] yielded a rate of 1.1%.

Hires were 5.423 million in April, up 4% from April 2014; the hires rate was 3.8%.

Total separations were 4.749 million up 7.2% in the last 12 months. This yielded a “turnover” rate of 3.4% for the month…an annual equivalent of 40.8%.

Within total separations, the 2.705 million quits [up 9.8%] yielded a quit rate of 1.9% percent and 1.679 million layoffs and discharges [up 4.4%] yielded a rate of 1.2 percent.
