• U.S. Job Openings, Hires, Turnover, Quits — March 2015


There were 4.921 million job openings [all data nsa] on the last business day of March, up 17.8% from the same month a year ago; the job openings rate was 3.4%.

Hires were 4.753 million in March, up 7.2% from March 2014; the hires rate was also 3.4%.

Total separations were 4.279 million up 11.1% in the last 12 months. This “turnover” rate was 3.0% for the month…an annual equivalent of 36.0%.

Within total separations, the 2.496 million quits [up 14.2%] yielded a quit rate of 1.8% percent, and 1.412 million layoffs and discharges [up 6.7%] yielded a rate of 1.0%.

• U.S. Job Openings and Labor Turnover — February 2015


Job Openings: There were 5.1 million job openings on the last business day of February, little changed from January. This was the highest level of job openings since January 2001. The job openings rate for February was 3.5 percent. The number of job openings was little changed for total private and government and no industries posted significant changes from January. Job openings increased in the Midwest region.

The number of job openings (not seasonally adjusted) increased over the 12 months ending in February for total nonfarm, total private, and government. Job openings increased over the year for many industries including professional and business services, health care and social assistance, and accommodation and food services. Job openings decreased over the year in mining and logging.

Hires: There were 4.9 million hires in February, about the same as in January. The hires rate in February was 3.5 percent.

Over the 12 months ending in February, the number of hires (not seasonally adjusted) was little changed for total nonfarm, total private, and government.

Turnover: There were 4.7 million total separations in February, about the same as in January. The separations rate was 3.3 percent.

Quits: There were 2.7 million quits in February, about the same as in January. The quits rate in February was 1.9 percent.

• U.S. Job Openings and Labor Turnover – January 2015


There were 5.05 million job openings on the last business day of January, up from 4.37 million in December.

Hires increased to 4.74 million in January.

This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the nonfarm sector by industry and by four geographic regions. The release also includes 2014 annual estimates for hires and separations.

The number of job openings (not seasonally adjusted) increased over the 12 months ending in December for total nonfarm, total private, and government. Job openings increased over the year for many industries including the professional and business services and the health care and social assistance industries. The number of openings increased over the year in all four regions.

Over the 12 months ending in December, the number of hires (not seasonally adjusted) increased for total nonfarm and total private, and was little changed for government. Hires increased over the year in construction, finance and insurance, and accommodation and food services. The number of hires increased in the South region.

Hires increased over the year in several industries, including retail trade and accommodation and food services. The number of hires increased in the Northeast and Midwest regions.

• U.S. Job Openings and Hires – September 2014


Job Openings: There were 4.7 million job openings on the last business day of September. The job openings rate was 3.3 percent. The number of job openings was little changed for total private and government in September. The level of job openings decreased for arts, entertainment, and recreation. The job openings level was little changed in all four regions.

Openings NSA: The number of job openings (not seasonally adjusted) increased over the 12 months ending in September for total nonfarm, total private, and government. The job openings level increased over the year for many industries, including both professional and business services and health care and social assistance.

Hires: The hires level increased to 5.0 million in September, up from 4.7 million in August. This was the highest level of hires since December 2007. The hires rate in September was 3.6 percent. The number of hires increased for total private and was little changed for government. Hires increased over the month in health care and social assistance as well as in the Midwest region. (See table 2.)

Hires NSA: Over the 12 months ending in September, the number of hires (not seasonally adjusted) increased for total nonfarm, total private, and government. The hires level increased over the year in many industries, including both professional and business services and health care and social assistance. The level decreased for real estate and rental and leasing.

• U.S. Job Openings and Hires – August 2014


There were 4.8 million job openings on the last business day of August and the rate was 3.4 percent. This was the highest level of job openings since January 2001. The number of job openings increased for total private and was little changed for government in August.

Job openings levels went up in nondurable goods manufacturing, health care and social assistance, and in accommodation and food services. Job openings fell in state and local government and were little changed in all four regions.

The number of job openings (not seasonally adjusted) increased over the 12 months ending in August 2014 for total nonfarm, total private, and government. The job openings level increased in many of the industries and in all four regions.

• U.S. Job Openings, Hires, and Labor Turnover – July 2014


There were 4.7 million job openings on the last business day of July and the rate was 3.3 percent. The 1-month change in the number of openings was not significant for total private, government, all industries, and in all four regions.

Although the number of total nonfarm job openings was little changed in July, there were 799,000 more job openings in July than in January 2014. The largest increases since January were in retail trade, professional and business services, and health care and social assistance.

There were 4.7 million job openings on the last business day of June, little changed from 4.6 million in May.

The hires rate (3.5 percent) was little changed and the separations rate (3.3 percent) was unchanged in June.

Within separations, the quits rate (1.8 percent) and the layoffs and discharges rate (1.2 percent) were unchanged.

• U.S. Job Openings and Labor Turnover – May 2014


Not Seasonally Adjusted Data:

Job Openings: There were 4.69 million job openings on the last business day of May, down from 4.94 million in April, but up 21% from 3.89 million in May 2013.

Hires: There were 5.33 million hires in May, up from 5.25 million the prior month and up 3.9% from May 2013.

Separations: Total turnover was 3.2% the same as in April but up from 3.1% a year ago.

Within separations, the quits rate, 1.9%, was up from 1.8% in April and 1.6% May 2013. Layoffs and discharges ran 1.1% down from 1.2% and 1.2% a year ago.

This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the non-farm sector by industry and by four geographic regions.

There were 4.5 million job openings on the last business day of April, up from 4.2 million in March.

The hires rate (3.4 percent) and separations rate (3.3 percent) were unchanged in April. Within separations, the quits rate (1.8 percent) and the layoffs and discharges rate (1.2 percent) were unchanged in April.

• U.S. Job Openings & Labor Turnover – March 2014


Note: As compared to March 2013, March 2014 job openings were up 3.5%, hires were up 7.6%, total turnover was up 7.4%, quits up 18.8%, and layoffs & discharges down 10.3% (all the foregoing NSA). The USDOL's summary, which is less than illuminating, commences here:

Job Openings: There were 4.0 million job openings in March, little changed from 4.1 million in February. The number of job openings (not seasonally adjusted) was little changed over the year ending in March for total nonfarm, total private, and government. Over the year, the job openings level increased in three industries and decreased in three industries.

Hires: There were 4.6 million hires in March, little changed from 4.7 million in February. Over the 12 months ending in March, the number of hires (not seasonally adjusted) increased for total nonfarm and total private and was little changed for government. The hires level increased over the year in four industries and decreased in construction.

Separations: There were 4.4 million total separations in March, little changed from February. The number of total separations was essentially unchanged for total private and government.

In March, the quits rate was unchanged at 1.8 percent for total nonfarm. The number of quits (not seasonally adjusted) increased over the 12 months ending in March for total nonfarm and total private. The quits level was little changed in government.

The layoffs and discharges rate was little changed in March at 1.1 percent. The layoffs and discharges level (not seasonally adjusted) was little changed over the 12 months ending in March for total nonfarm, total private, and government. The number of layoffs and discharges increased in mining and logging and information but decreased in other services and federal government.

• U.S. Job Openings and Labor Turnover – February 2014


There were 4.2 million job openings in February, up from 3.9 million in January. The number of openings rose for total private and was little changed for government. The number of job openings increased in retail trade and in professional and business services, while the number of job openings decreased in arts, entertainment, and recreation. The South region experienced a rise in job openings in February.

The hires rate (3.3 percent) and separations rate (3.2 percent) were unchanged in February.
