“’The theme for labor demand this year is up-one-month and down-the-next,’ said June Shelp, Vice President of The Conference Board. ‘Eleven months into the year, we’ve seen six months up and five months down, with a net result of basically flat labor demand (a gain of fewer than 18,000 per month).’

”Since November 2012 employers’ demand for labor has been cautious. While the overall demand for labor has hovered around 5 million this year, the largest numerical gains since last year are for sales workers (+101,000), transportation workers (+71,000), and food service workers (+54,000).

”The most striking pattern is that many of the high-wage professional occupations have very modest gains. Since last November, demand for computer and math occupations has risen just 6,100 while business and finance occupations are up 4,700. Over the same period, the gains for construction workers (up 8,100) and production/manufacturing workers (up 7,000) are in the middle of the pack with relatively modest gains.”

• U.S. Help-Wanted Advertising – October 2013

”Online advertised vacancies were down 257,900 in October to 4,926,800, according to The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine® (HWOL) Data Series released today. The September Supply/Demand rate stands at 2.2 unemployed for each vacancy, with a total of 6.1 million more unemployed workers than the number of advertised vacancies.

”’Slow overall economic growth has left labor demand flat in the first 10 months of 2013,’ said June Shelp, Vice President of The Conference Board. ‘Even though the labor demand level still hovers around 5 million/month, the October loss leaves the 2013 year-to-date basically flat. This continues the trend we’ve seen this year with gains in one month being offset by declines the next month.’

”Since October 2012, the most striking pattern is that most of the Professional occupations have seen losses while the Production/Service jobs have continued with modest gains. Over the year, higher-wage Professional occupations like Computer &Math jobs (-32,000) and Healthcare professionals (-29,000) lost job demand while lower-wage Production/Service jobs like Transportation (+54,000), Sales (+36,000), and Food service (+33,000) have posted gains."

• U.S. Help-Wanted Advertising – September 2013

”Online advertised vacancies were up 209,700 in September to 5,184,600, according to The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine® (HWOL) Data Series released today. The September rise is the first rise of over 200,000 since December 2012. The September Supply/Demand rate stands at 2.3 unemployed for each vacancy with a total of 6.3 million more unemployed workers than the number of advertised vacancies.

“’The 210,000 gain for September is the first optimistic sign this year that employers are seeking additional workers,’ said June Shelp, Vice President of The Conference Board. ‘This brings the gain for Q3 to 68,000/month and follows a Q2 gain of 27,000/month and a Q1 loss of 26,000/month.’”

• U.S. Help-Wanted Advertising – August 2013

”Online advertised vacancies were up 86,800 in August to 4,974,900, according to The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine® (HWOL) Data Series released today.

"The modest August gain was not enough to offset earlier months’ losses, leaving labor demand basically where it was eight months ago in December 2012….

“’This has not been a great year for labor demand,’ said June Shelp, Vice President of The Conference Board. ‘While the churn in the labor market is there (with almost 5 million jobs advertised each month), the end results are disappointing. Thus far in 2013, ten of the 22 major occupational categories are down, offsetting increases in the 12 other groups.’”
