Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 126,000 in March. Employment continued to trend up in professional and business services, health care, and retail trade, while mining lost jobs. The unemployment rate held at 5.5 percent, and the number of unemployed persons was little changed at 8.6 million. Over the year, the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons were down by 1.1 percentage points and 1.8 million, respectively.
