• U.S. Productivity and Unit Labor Costs – Q2 2012
Productivity: Nonfarm business sector labor productivity increased at a 2.2 percent annual rate during the second quarter of 2012. The increase in productivity reflects increases of 2.4 percent in output and 0.1 percent in hours worked. (All quarterly percent changes in this release are seasonally adjusted annual rates.) From the second quarter of 2011 to the second quarter of 2012, productivity increased 1.2 percent as output and hours worked rose 3.0 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively. Labor Costs: Unit labor costs in nonfarm businesses increased 1.5 percent in the second quarter of 2012, while hourly compensation increased 3.7 percent. • U.S. Post-Recession Job Gains Skewed to Lower Wages
”During the recession, employment losses occurred throughout the economy, but were concentrated in mid-wage occupations. By contrast, during the recovery, employment gains have been concentrated in lower-wage occupations, which grew 2.7 times as fast as mid-wage and higher-wage occupations. Specifically: • Lower-wage occupations were 21 percent of recession losses, but 58 percent of recovery growth. • Mid-wage occupations were 60 percent of recession losses, but only 22 percent of recovery growth. • Higher-wage occupations were 19 percent of recession job losses, and 20 percent of recovery growth.” Source: NELP.org |
• U.S. Construction Spending Dropped in July 2012
Construction spending during July 2012 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $834.4 billion, 0.9 percent (±1.8%) below the revised June estimate of $842.2 billion. The July figure is 9.3 percent (±2.3%) above the July 2011 estimate of $763.5 billion.During the first 7 months of this year, construction spending amounted to $464.4 billion, 9.3 percent (±1.5%) above the $425.0 billion for the same period in 2011. ”Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in August for the third time since July 2009; however, the overall economy grew for the 39th consecutive month, say the nation's supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business®…. ”Manufacturing contracted in August as the PMI™ registered 49.6 percent, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point when compared to July's reading of 49.8 percent.”A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting.
